How to Buy Native Plants and Take Care of Them

Where do you buy native plants? One place to look is at your local nursery. Many nurseries that specialize in exotic plants have a wide range of selections for sale. Not only can you find what you are looking for, but you may also find the ones you have been looking for, in much lower prices. Many times the plants are shipped to a dealer’s greenhouse so that they can be sold to you at a more competitive price.

However, many exotic and native plant dealers also have sales and exchanges. Look around at your local nursery to see if they have any sales or exchanges. You may be able to buy a similar-sized plant for less money than what you would pay at a big box store.

Another option is to buy native plants online. The Internet has opened up a whole new world of buying plants. There are thousands of different exotic plants available for purchase online. Even nurseries can now sell plants online. If you do buy native plants online at there are a few things that you should know before you buy.

First, the plant you buy may not be what you thought it was. Sometimes nurseries send replicas that look like the originals so that you will buy them. However, these may not be true replicas and may actually be the exact plant that are offered by the retailer.

Second, some dealers may mark up their plants more than the nursery. You need to ask what they get from the nursery before buying. Sometimes you will see small but noticeable marks on the plant such as red spider mite lines. This is not a sign of a quality plant and the dealer may be selling low quality plants to make a quick buck off of you.

Shipping is a consideration. Some dealers ship plants by UPS or FedEx. Others will ship by the U.S. Post Office Priority Mail or by Registered Mail. It is best to choose a company that offers you an excellent rate for shipping. You will be paying for the plant, not the shipping costs so you want to make sure that you are not paying too much.

If you can find a reputable nursery that ships by UPS or FedEx, it will save you money on your purchase. Also, if the company ships by UPS or FedEx, you can ship your plants anywhere in the country. This can be a great way to get a plant and have it outside your back door in just a few weeks. Some nurseries also have specialists that can help you with any questions you have regarding your new native plant.
